Texas State banged out 14 hits and took advantage of seven Texas A&M-Corpus Christi errors Saturday to defeat the Islanders 13-5 at the UTPA Classic.
With the win, Texas State improved to 2-0 heading into Sunday's game against conference rival Texas-Arlington at the round-robin tournament. UTA suffered a 5-4 loss to host Texas-Pan American Saturday to fall to 1-1 heading into Sunday's game against the Bobcats.
Texas State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. Cassidy Dresch singled, stole second and scored on an error in the second inning to put the `Cats on the scoreboard. In the third, designated hitter Jared Bunn belted a two-run double to extend the Bobcats' margin.
After Texas A&M-Corpus Christi answered with two runs in the fourth, the Bobcats scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cody Ross and Nolan Mast led off the inning with back-to-back singles and after Mast was picked off, Dawid Bednarek singled to score Ross. Bednarek later scored on a base hit by Kyle Anson. The `Cats went on to score three more runs in the inning.
Texas State starter Ryan Bennett gave up four hits and two runs while striking out two and walking two to pick up the win for the Bobcats. Returning pitchers Jason Baca and Chris Hill saw their first action on the mound this season and combined to not give up a hit over the final 2 1/3 innings of work.
