'Cats Shutout Texas-Pan American in Season Opener

EDINBURG - Texas State veteran Chris Jean and junior college transfers Tyler Bryant and B.J. Boening combined to pitch a five-hit shutout as the Bobcats defeated Texas-Pan American 9-0 on the first day of the UTPA Classic here Friday.

Jean, a senior right-hander from Burleson, gave up just two hits and struck out five in five innings of work to pick up the win.

The Bobcats take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday as the round-robin tournament continues at Edinburg Stadium. The Islanders opened their season to Texas-Arlington on Friday as the Mavericks rallied from a two-run deficit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

In the night cap, Texas State banged out 10 hits as the Bobcats opened their season against UT-Pan American for the third straight year.

Junior college transfer Heath Keel homered to lead off the second inning and senior shortstop Dominic Ramos scored an unearned run in the third to put the `Cats in front 2-0.

Texas State would extend its lead to 5-0 in the fourth as Nolan Mast tripled to drive in two runs and scored on a Dawid Bednarek single to centerfield.

After another run scored in the sixth, Preseason All-Southland Conference third baseman Kyle Anson tripled to drive in two runs in a three-run eighth inning.
