SAN MARCOS -
Chris Langhorne's stick-back jumper from the lane with 0.8 seconds culminated a last-minute Texas State rally as the Bobcats defeated Texas-Arlington 75-72 Saturday in Strahan Coliseum.
Trailing 70-64 with just over a minute to play, Texas State's comeback began with Bobcat guard Brad Brickens attempting to steal the ball from UTA point guard Brady Dawkins near midcourt. Brickens knocked the ball away and Dawkins was whistled for a personal foul.
Brickens would make the first of two free throws and Zach Allison came down with an offensive rebound of the missed second attempt and quickly fed Josh Naylor for a three-pointer that cut the Mavericks' lead to 70-68 with a minute to play. After two free throws by UTA's Steven Thomas extended the Mavs' lead back out to four points, Naylor again drilled a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play to cut the lead to 72-71.
With 11 seconds remaining, Thomas missed the front end of a one-and-one and Langhorne rebounded the errant shot. At the other end of the floor, Naylor pulled up for a long jumper that caromed off the goal and Langhorne got off a swift release of the missed shot from inside the paint. The shot fell and the Bobcats took the lead for the first time since the opening minute of the period.
Texas-Arlington coach Eddie McCarter was whistled for a technical foul when he threw a clip board the length of his bench after arguing with the officiating crew and Naylor hit two free throws to account for the final score.
With the win, Texas State improved to 11-9 and 5-4 in the Southland Conference while snapping a three-game UTA winning streak. The Mavericks are now 10-9 and 5-4. The Bobcats return to action Wednesday when they travel to Stephen F. Austin.
The three-point shooting of Jarrett Howell and Rodrick Epps kept the Mavericks out in front throughout the second period. The Mavericks were 6-of-12 from behind the arc in the period and were 11-of-22 from three-point range for the game. Howell scored 19 points, making 4-of-6 three-pointers while Epps was 3-for-5 from three-point range in the second half after being held scoreless in the first half.
Texas State won despite UTA shooting 56 percent from the field, marking the first time the Bobcats have won this season when an opponent has shot over 50 percent for the game. The `Cats shot 47 percent from the field and turned the ball over just 10 times on the night.
Naylor scored 21 points to lead the Bobcats while Allison finished with 19 points and had a team-leading four assists. Anthony Dill added 14 points in the win.
