SAN MARCOS -
Texas State needed a pair of wins in doubles play Saturday to post a 4-3 win over Louisiana Tech in a tennis marathon played at the university's tennis complex.
Due to Saturday's rains, the match was moved indoors. Unfortunately with only two covered courts, it took close to six hours to play the match which included three singles matches which went to three sets.
The match was tied at 3-3 after singles play but in doubles action, Texas State's Melanie Hall teamed with Tina Klemenc at No. 1 doubles to beat Louisiana Tech's Avril Martinexz and Monica Kelly 8-4 while at No. 2 doubles Leja Sirola and Margaret Potyrala defeated Holly Ready and Saharai Uriarte 8-2 to decide the match.
With the win, Texas State improved to 3-5 while Louisiana Tech fell to 4-5. The Bobcats were originally slated to play UNC-Wilmington this week but that match has been cancelled. The `Cats next match is Saturday when they open Southland Conference play against Louisiana-Monroe.
In singles play Saturday Sirola won at No. 1 singles against Uriarte 7-5, 4-6, 10-4. The Bobcats would also win at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Jana Cucciniello defeated Katie Westbrook 6-4, 7-5 while Sumarie Muller came up with another three-set win for the `Cats, defeating Martinez 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.
"Louisiana Tech was up 3-2 and Sumarie had to win her match to send it to doubles," said Texas State coach Tory Plunkett. "Once we got to doubles, we took care of business. Beating a WAC school (Western Athletic Conference) is a big win for us."
