Softball Wins One and Loses One at Crowne Plaza Classic

SAN MARCOS - Texas State's softball team split two games Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Classic played at the University of Houston. The 'Cats suffered a 16-2 loss to No. 11 Baylor before rebounding to beat Kentucky, 12-3.

Baylor got off to a quick start in Texas State's first game, plating three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Tessa Lynam put the Lady Bears on the board with her two-run blast over the right field wall to score Harmony Schwethelm and give Baylor a 2-0 lead. The home run was the second of the season for Lynam.

The Lady Bears then extended the lead to three when April Luce singled to score Kim Wilmoth.

Texas State cut the lead to two with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Katie Ann Trahan RBI single. However, Baylor starter Lisa Ferguson worked out of a two-out jam by forcing Heather Ackley into a fielder's choice to keep the score at 3-1.

The Lady Bears then managed to put the game away in the fourth inning with four runs. After loading the bases with nobody out, Schwethelm grounded out to score Katie Ottens and Lynam followed with her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jordan Daniels.

Olivia Henley took the loss for Texas State, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings of work as she fell to 0-3 on the season.

Later in the day, Texas State scored 11 runs on seven hits in the third inning inning to bolt out to a 12-2 lead against Kentucky.

Leslie Sharp started the rally as the lead off batter with a solo homerun. With runners on first and second Trahan doubled to center field for an RBI. Ashley Wilson singled, but advanced to second on a bad throw allowing Kristen Gunter to score from third. Rachael Bonetti hit a two RBI double to right field to bring in Wilson and Trahan.

Holly Britain reached first on a single advancing pinch runner Danielle Vice to second when Peters hit a homerun scoring all three. Giving the Bobcats the 8-2 lead. Gunter added the Bobcats three final runs of the inning with a three-run homer scoring Sharp and Amy Hromadka.

Trahan picked up her fourth win of the season while UK's Samantha Allen drops to 1-6 on the season. Trahan allowed three Wildcat runs on seven hits.

Sunday will be the final day for the Crowne Plaza Classic as Texas State will face host University of Houston at 1:00 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
