HOUSTON -
North Carolina rallied for four runs in the third inning, including a lead-off homer by Whitney Gelin en route to a 5-3 win over Texas State Friday at the Crowne Plaza Classic.
The Tar Heels improved to 8-1 with a split of Friday's games at the round-robin tournament hosted by the University of Houston. Texas State is now 3-9 on the year.
North Carolina would take advantage of an error in the third as the Tar Heels scored three more runs during the frame. UNC added a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Casey Testa.
Texas State would rally for three runs in the sixth.
Amy Krueger walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on a double by Kristen Gunter. Krueger scored on a sacrifice fly by Holly Britain. Katie Ann Trahan reached on an error that advanced Gunter to third. Pinch running for Trahan, Jill Kloesel stole second. Ashley Wilson would then drive in two runs with a one-out double but would be stranded at second as Rachael Bonetti flied out and Ashton Peters grounded out to end the rally.
Texas State continues play at the Crowne Plaza Classic Saturday, taking on Baylor at 9 a.m. then return to action at 1 p.m. against Kentucky. The Bobcats close out tournament play Sunday against host Houston.
