Minnesota manufactured a two-out run in the first inning and went on to shutout Texas State 1-0 Friday during the first day of the Crowne Plaza Classic hosted by the University of Houston.
With the win, Minnesota improved to 6-2 on the year while Texas State dropped to 3-8.
The Gophers got their lone run in the first inning after Lindsey Erickson doubled to center field. With two outs, Megan Higginbotham singled to score Erickson.
The Bobcats left the tying run at third in the bottom of the first. With one out, Amy Krueger walked and advanced to second when Kristen Gunter grounded out. Krueger would move to third on a wild pitch before Katie Ann Trahan struck out to end the threat.
Pitching for the `Cats, Trahan scattered four hits while striking out seven as her record fell to 3-6. Minnesota starter Katie Dolan gave up just three hits in the shutout victory to improve to 2-1.
Texas State takes on North Carolina later Friday and the round-robin tournament continues through Sunday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
