SAN MARCOS -
Every Texas State player had a win either at singles, doubles or both Thursday as the Bobcats opened at home with a 5-2 win over St. Edward's.
Texas State improved to 1-5 after a challenging opening two weeks of the season in which the team played three nationally-ranked opponents. St. Edward's, which was coming off a 5-4 win over Texas-San Antonio earlier in the week, dropped to 1-2 on the year.
Texas State picked up four wins in singles play, including a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win by Sumarie Muller over Nicole Williams at No. 6 singles. Jana Cucciniello, Margaret Potyrala and Tina Klemenc also won their singles matches. Playing at No. 2 singles, Melanie Hall dropped a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 10-7 decision to St. Edward's Alyssia Palacios. Leja Sirola also lost a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Andrea Adamson a No. 1 singles.
Both Hall and Sirola would rally in doubles play to win matches. Hall teamed with Klemenc to defeat Palacios and Bruna Tasso de Oliveira at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Sirola and Potyrala posted an 8-2 win over Andrea and Sophia Adamson at No. 2 doubles.
We had heard St. Edward's had beat Texas-San Antonio earlier so we knew it was going to be a tough match," said second-year Texas State coach Tory Plunkett. "Our confidence has always been there and we played awesome today. This match just solidified the confidence that we have built."
The Bobcats return to action next Friday as they play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
