SAN MARCOS -
The Texas Longhorns combined a perfect game from Olympic gold medalist Cat Osterman in game one and a one-hitter from freshman Meagan Denny in game two to sweep a doubleheader (4-0 and 2-0) from Texas State on Wednesday at Bobcat Field.
In game one, Osterman (2-0) struck out 17 Bobcats to propel Texas to victory. It was the fifth perfect game and 10th career no-hitter for the junior left-hander. Katie Ann Trahan (3-6) took the loss for Texas State in game one.
After an unearned run in the third, Texas' used a two-run home run off the bat of second baseman Chez Sievers to extend the lead to three in the fifth inning. A seventh inning insurance run provided more than enough for Osterman.
Game two produced a battle of freshmen pitchers, as Denny (2-0) out dueled Bobcat lefthander Olivia Henley (0-1) for the victory. It was Denny's second career one-hit shutout in as many starts.
Henley scattered six hits and struck out five in her first collegiate start. She allowed only one walk and helped herself with multiple defensive plays on the mound.
The Longhorn offense got single runs in the fourth and seventh innings to provide the winning margin. In the fourth, a leadoff single down the left field line by shortstop Desiree Williams started the Texas rally. Williams was sacrificed to second on a bunt by third baseman Wynter Turner and heads up base running on the play allowed her to steal third. She later scored on an RBI single by Jacqueline Williams.
Jacqueline Williams also started the rally that produced Texas' seventh inning insurance run, as she walked to lead off the frame. Lacy Robinson was inserted as a pinch runner and immediately sacrificed over to second by catcher Megan Willis. Pinch hitter Monica Askew then singled up the middle to provide the final margin.
Texas State's lone hit of the day was a one-out, fifth inning double off the bat of catcher Rachael Bonetti. The Bobcats only other base runner of the game was a third inning walk to shortstop Leslie Sharp.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend at the University of Houston Crowne Plaza Classic. Texas State will face Minnesota (11 a.m.) and North Carolina (1 p.m.) on the tournament's opening day.
