Texas State second baseman Cassidy Dresch went 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs as Texas State defeated Angelo State 11-5 Sunday and swept a two-game weekend series.
With the win, Texas State improved to 4-1 heading into a mid-week series with Texas-Pan American Tuesday and Wednesday at Bobcat Field. Angelo State fell to 0-3 in its debut season playing ball as a senior college.
Angelo State would jump out to a 2-1 lead in the second inning, taking advantage of two Bobcat errors.
Texas State would come back with four runs in the second inning. Dawid Bednarek ripped a two-run double and moved to third on an error. Dominic Ramos would draw a walk and steal second before Dresch singled to drive in two more runs to give the Bobcats a 5-1 lead.
Ramos reached safely on all five of his plate appearances and tied a school record by scoring five runs. Three other Texas State players have scored five runs in a game, the last being Lance Williams, Feb. 3, 2001 against Texas Southern.
In addition to reaching safely on three walks and an error on the day, Ramos tripled and scored on a base hit by Dresch in the fourth. Dresch would also later score in the inning when Kyle Jones reached on an error that gave the `Cats a 7-3 lead.
The Rams cut Texas State's lead to 7-5 in the top half of the fifth. John Beale drew a walk, moved to third on a single by Drew Carraway and scored when J.W. Nastoupil grounded out to Dresch at second. Kyle Mandelbaum then hit a solo home run to dead center field. The Rams' next batter, Nathan Hemm, singled to chase Texas State starter Bobby Sawicki.
Sawicki pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs. Reliever Tyler Bryant (1-0) came on in the fifth to pitch 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win while Jason Baca and B.J. Boening combined to shutout the Rams over the last three innings.
Ramos would score an unearned run in the sixth after reaching on an error that gave the Bobcats an 8-5 lead. Texas State would add a run in the seventh and get two more in the eighth, including an RBI double by Dresch.
