UTSA Scores 88-69 Win Over Texas State

SAN ANTONIO - John Millsap scored 24 points, including 16 in the second half, as Texas-San Antonio posted an 88-69 win over Texas State Saturday at the Convocation Center.

With the win, UTSA improved to 11-10 overall and 6-4 in Southland Conference play. Texas State lost its second on the road this week to fall to 11-11 and 5-6 in the SLC.

Texas State entered the game short-handed as a reoccurring shoulder injury left junior point guard Brad Brickens on the bench in an arm sling and street clothes. Senior forward Anthony Dill, who is averaging a team-best 15.7 points and 7.5 rebounds, dressed for the game but did not play because of back spasms which have affected him his entire career at Texas State.

Junior swingman Chris Langhorne, who missed the second half of Thursday's game against Stephen F. Austin with an ankle sprain played 13 minutes, finishing with six points.

Texas State took the lead momentarily early in the second half as the Bobcats opened the period with a 9-1 lead.

Roderick Adams began the period with a driving layup before Zach Allison and Markee White scored inside. Josh Naylor's three-pointer with 18:13 to play gave the Bobcats a 44-43 lead.

But UTSA would take advantage of two straight Bobcat turnovers and a couple missed shots by the `Cats to regain the lead at 50-44. The Roadrunners would go on to stretch out that lead.

After a three-point play by White with 11:05 to play cut the Roadrunners' lead to 58-55, the Bobcats locked down on defense forcing UTSA to go through the entire shot clock before Ray Selvage was able to come up with a putback of a `Runner miss to spark an 10-0 run which included three-pointers by Raphael Posey and Justin Harbert.

The rally put Texas-San Antonio up 68-55 with 7:59 to play.

In the first half, UTSA used a 7-0 run to break open a one-point game.

After a Naylor three-pointer made the score 18-17, Harbert scored then Millsap made a pair of baskets including a fast-break layup to put the Roadrunners in front 25-17.

UTSA's Andre Owens scored all 19 of his points in the first half, going 7-of-9 from the field and knocking down 3-of-4 three-pointers. He was 0-for-5 in the second half.

As a team, the Roadrunners shot 55 percent from the field in the half and made six of their 12 three-point attempts in the period. For the game UTSA shot 53 percent while holding the Bobcats to 40.7 percent shooting in the second period.

Naylor and Allison each finished with a team-high 13 points while Adams scored 11 and White had 10.

Texas-San Antonio led 42-30 before the Bobcats ended the half with five unanswered points including a three-pointer at the buzzer by Lance Burroughs that cut the margin to 42-35 at the break.
