Hawaii Overpowers Texas State in NCAA First Round

AUSTIN - Lawrencia Brown posted 13 kills and Brittany Prewit had ten digs, but hot-hitting No. 7 Hawaii proved to be too much for the Bobcats in a 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 30-23) sweep Friday at Gregory Gymnasium in Austin.

The loss dropped the `Cats to 17-15 on the season and 0-5 all-time in NCAA tournament play, while Hawaii moved to 26-6 and advanced to a 6:30 p.m. second-round match Saturday in Austin.

Hawaii hit .356 in the game, powered by a pair of players with double-digit kills. Jamie Houston led the Rainbow Wahine with 13 kills, while Victoria Prince chipped in 12 to go along with a .667 percentage in the Hawaii win.

Brown's 13 kills represented the only double-digit night for the Bobcats, while Prewit's ten digs marked the `Cats only double-digit dig performance. Senior Libero Amy Ramirez posted eight digs in the loss, moving her single-season total to 508, which ranks second on the school's all-time single-season digs list.

Texas State was held to a .102 percentage on 51 Hawaii digs and 20 team blocks, led by Susie Boogaard's 15 digs and Prince's seven stuffs.

Texas State stayed close throughout game one, but a pair of Rainbow Wahine runs put the `Cats away in the 30-25 first game.

With the game tied at 8-8, Hawaii went on a 5-1 run to go up 13-9, forcing a Bobcat time out. A Karry Griffin kill coupled with a Texas State block put the `Cats within two at 13-11, and the Bobcats completed the 4-0 run with an ace and a block to tie the game at 13-13.

The game would tie three more times following points that gave Hawaii the lead, until a Brandy St. Francis kill followed a long rally to give Texas State a 17-16 lead from a 16-16 tie.

A Texas State error tied the game at 17-17, but Brown followed the miscue with a kill to give the `Cats an 18-17 lead.

Hawaii got the next three points to go up 20-18, and after Texas State posted a kill to get within one at 20-19, a 4-1 Hawaii run put the Rainbow Wahine up 24-20.

Hawaii finished the game by outscoring the `Cats 6-5 on the way to the five-point win, putting the Rainbow Wahine up 1-0 in the match.

Hawaii came out firing in game two, using a 7-1 run to open the game, and after Texas State shot back to get within four at 11-7, a 5-0 clip put Hawaii up 15-7 halfway through the second game.

The teams traded points to a 17-9 Hawaii lead, and from there the Rainbow Wahine went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 23-10 lead.

Texas State battled back with an 8-1 run to get within six at 24-18, but Hawaii scored the final six points to win the game 30-18. The 12-point win earned the Rainbow Wahine a 2-0 lead in the match heading into the intermission break.

Texas State battled in game three, jumping out to an early 5-2 lead, but Hawaii outscored the Bobcats 15-8 to take a late 20-13 lead.

A 5-1 Bobcat run cut the Hawaii lead to three at 21-18, but the Rainbow Wahine finished on a 9-5 run to win the game 30-23 and the match 3-0.

Texas State ends the season with a Southland Conference tournament title and a 17-15 record, while the 2005 WAC Champion Rainbow Wahine advance to the second round with a record of 26-6.
