SMU's Derrick Roberts scored 20 points and the Mustangs outdid the Bobcats 45-33 in the second half, as SMU beat Texas State 78-67 Thursday at Strahan Coliseum.
C.J. Webster led the Bobcats with 14 points and was joined by three more `Cats in double digits, while SMU put four in double figures in the 11-point win. Texas State managed to out-rebound SMU 36-29 in the ballgame, but SMU shot a blistering 62.5 percent from the field in the second half to earn the victory.
To open the game, SMU broke a 4-4 tie with a Donatas Rackauskas lay-up at the 18:10 mark in the half, sparking a 9-0 run that earned SMU a 13-4 lead with 14:36 to go in the first.
Texas State responded to the Mustang spurt with a 5-0 scoring clip that cut the Mustang advantage to four, and a Jason Rogers three-point bucket at the 9:13 mark clipped the SMU lead to one at 18-17.
Texas State forced a missed bucket on SMU's next trip, and a C.J. Webster dunk on the Bobcat end gave Texas State its first lead at 18-17 with 8:38 to play in the half.
A Dez Willingham three-point goal on the next SMU trip down the floor gave the Mustangs a 20-18 lead and started a 9-0 run that put the Mustangs on top 26-18. Texas State answered by outscoring SMU 10-2 over the next 5:05, tying the game at 28-28, and a last-minute Webster lay-up put Texas State up 34-33 heading into the halftime break.
SMU opened the second half on a 14-6 run that spanned the first four minutes, but Texas State climbed back with a Jushay Rockett three at the 13:11 mark that put the Bobcats within five at 51-46.
The `Cats cut further into the Mustang lead with 10:52 to play, slashing the advantage to 53-51 on a Lance Burroughs lay-up. The Mustangs would answer with six straight points and a pair of fast-break dunks, as SMU maintained the lead with a pair of Ike Ofoegbu free throws at the 5:25 mark that ran the count to 64-55.
The Mustangs ran away with the final 5:00, outscoring the `Cats 14-12 to get the 78-67 win.
Texas State (0-5) will take the weekend off before a bout with Arkansas on Dec. 6. Tip time for Wednesday's contest between the Bobcats and Razorbacks is slated for 7:05 p.m. in Fayetteville. SMU (3-2) plays at Oklahoma State Saturday.
