Cougars Spoil Volleyball Senior Night in Four

SAN MARCOS - Lawrencia Brown had 13 kills and Brittany Prewit chipped in 12, but Houston played the role of spoiler, beating the Bobcats 3-1 on Senior Night at Strahan Coliseum.

Texas State (14-12) looked sharp in game one, beating the Cougars 30-26 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Bobcats scored the first point of the match on a Prewit kill, and after falling behind 2-1, Texas State used a 3-0 run to hop in front 4-2 and would not trail again in the game. Houston got within one at 10-9, but three consecutive Bobcat points made the score 13-9, and the `Cats capped the 7-3 run with a Houston error that lengthened the lead to 17-12.

Houston (16-10) fired back to get within two at 21-19, but the Bobcats outscored the Cougars 9-6 to close out the four-point win.

The Cougars struck first in game one, and after the two teams fought to a 10-9 Bobcat advantage, Houston scored six straight to take a 15-10 lead. The Cougars went on to extend the lead to 25-17, and closed with a 5-3 run to win the game 30-20, knotting the match at 1-1.

Texas State opened game three with a 4-2 lead, but Houston again went on a long run, outscoring the Bobcats 8-0 to take a 10-4 lead in the game. Texas State managed to cut the Cougar lead to two at 17-15, but another Houston spurt made the score 20-15. Texas State clawed back into the game, going on a 5-1 run that cut the Cougar advantage to 21-20.

Houston scored the next three points to take a 24-20 lead, but the Bobcats again took a swing at the lead, going on a 3-0 run at 28-24 to make the score 28-27. Houston got within one of closing the game at 29-27, but two straight Bobcat points tied the game at 29-29. A Houston kill put the Cougars on top 30-29, but a Brown kill again tied the score at 30-30.

Back-to-back Cougar kills ended the game at 32-30, putting Houston up 2-1 in the match.

Game four started to go back-and-forth, but with the score tied at 4-4, a 7-1 Houston run pushed the Cougar advantage to 11-5. Like the third game, Texas State fought back to get within a point at 18-17, and the Bobcats were able to tie the game at 22-22 on a Houston error.

Houston finished strong, outscoring the `Cats 8-4 en route to the 30-26 win and the 3-1 decision in the match.

Brown's 13 kills led Texas State, while Prewit (12) and Brandy St. Francis (10) were the other duo of Bobcats in double-digits. Prewit and Brown also carded double-double matches, and Amy Ramirez led the Bobcat defense with 19 digs.

Texas State will finish the regular season this weekend, when the `Cats play at Louisiana-Monroe and Northwestern State. Texas State takes on ULM Friday at 7 p.m., while Saturday's match with Northwestern State is slated for a 4 p.m. first serve.
