Bobcats Knock Out Broncs in Four

SAN MARCOS - Elizabeth Nwoke had 24 kills and Brandy St. Francis stuffed eight blocks as Texas State (6-7) beat Texas-Pan American (3-11) 30-26, 21-30, 30-26, 30-24 on "Pack the House Night" at UTPA.

Texas State got off to a good start in game one jumping out to a 3-1 lead, but the Broncs quickly erased the Bobcat advantage and took a 5-4 lead of their own. The two teams went back and forth with the lead and with the Broncs on top 10-9, Texas State forced two UTPA errors to grab an 11-10 advantage. The Bobcats then went on a 4-1 run that made the score 15-11, but UTPA again fired back, forcing a tie at 19-19 and eventually taking a 23-22 lead.

Texas State would outscore the Broncs 8-4 to close game one with a 30-26 win.

Game two went to UTPA, with the Broncs jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Texas State rallied back, getting within five points twice in the second game, but the Broncs cruised into the intermission with a 30-21 win that evened the match at 1-1.

In game three, UTPA scored the first point but would not lead again in the game. Texas State's biggest lead was six, and with the score in favor of the Bobcats 17-11, UTPA went on a 12-6 spurt that put the Broncs behind by just one at 23-22. Three UTPA errors in the game's last seven points helped the `Cats outscore the Broncs 7-4 and close game three with a 30-26 win.

Leading 2-1 in the match, Texas State poured in on in the early goings of game four, as three Brittany Prewit service aces and a Kelly Fletcher kill gave the Bobcats a 4-0 lead to open the fourth game.

UTPA again fought back, tying the game at 11-11 and eventually taking a 16-15 lead, but Texas State regained the lead at 17-16 and moved the lead to three at 25-22. A pair of kills by UTPA's Heather Bravo cut the Bobcat lead to one at 25-24, but the `Cats would score the final five points of the fourth and decisive game for a 30-24 win and a 3-1 victory in the match.

Nwoke finished with a team-high 24 kills, while Lawrencia Brown pitched in 14 kills and St. Francis notched ten. St. Francis also had a team-best eight blocks while Erin Hickman assisted on 44 of the `Cats 64 kills. Three Bobcats had double-digits in the dig column, led by Amy Ramirez with 13.

Texas State returns to action Friday, when the Bobcats play host to Louisiana-Monroe at Strahan Coliseum. Friday's first serve is slated for 7 p.m.
