Texas State rallied for a pair of two-point wins, and Lawrencia Brown knocked down a career-high 23 kills in a 30-23, 22-30, 30-28, 30-28 win Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State (12-9, 10-3 SLC) hopped out to a 5-1 lead in game one, but Lamar fired back scoring the next five points to lead 6-5. The Bobcats answered by going on a 7-2 run, including three aces for Brown, giving the `Cats a 12-8 lead.
Lamar (5-17, 3-7 SLC) would get back within two points at 14-12, but another big Texas State spurt made the score 19-14. From that point, Texas State rallied for a 6-3 run that extended the lead to 25-17, and despite a last-ditch rally that got the Cardinals within five, Texas State held on for the 30-23 win to go up 1-0 in the match.
The Cardinals stormed from the gates in game two, jumping out to a 5-2 lead and extending it to 17-11, prompting a Texas State time out midway through the game. Texas State got back within two at 24-22 with an 11-7 run, but the Cards scored the next six points to close the game with a 30-22 win and even the match at 1-1.
Texas State opened game three with a 3-1 lead, but Lamar got the next two points to tie the game at 3-3. After another tie at 4-4, Texas State scored two consecutive to lead 6-4, and Lamar again shot back, tying the game at 7-7 and taking the lead at 8-7.
The Bobcats came back to tie the game at 11-11, and after again falling behind 12-11, Texas State went on a 6-0 run to lead 17-12. Lamar scored the next three points to cut the lead to 17-15, but the Bobcats again found an answer with two scores to go up 19-15.
Lamar got within two at 23-21 and 24-22, and after the `Cats scored four straight to lead 28-22, Lamar sparked a 6-1 run that made the score 29-28. Karry Griffin slammed a ball into the floor at game point for the 30-28 win, earning the `Cats a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Texas State capped the 3-1 win with a 30-28 decision in game four, beginning with a Brown kill and a Lamar error that put the `Cats up 2-0. Lamar tied the game at 2-2, but a 4-1 run put Texas State up 6-3.
Lamar got back within one at 9-8, and after back-and-forth points made the score 15-12 at the game's midway point, Lamar went on a 7-2 run to lead 19-17. Texas State crawled back with a 4-2 clip that tied the game at 21-21, and one more Bobcat point put the `Cats up 22-21 and forced a Lamar time out.
Texas State outlasted the Cardinals 8-7 to end the game, leaving the Bobcats with a second-straight 30-28 win and a 3-1 win match win.
Brown's career-best 23 kills led the Bobcat offense, while Erin Hickman provided 56 assists on 74 Texas State team kills. Amy Ramirez rolled up 16 digs to lead the Bobcat defense, and Brandy St. Francis posted six blocks to lead Texas State up front.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, when McNeese State comes to San Marcos for a 4 p.m. first serve at Strahan Coliseum.
