SAN MARCOS -
Texas State soccer grabbed a 2-1 win from McNeese State on Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The game, only the second since Sept. 18 for McNeese after Hurricane Rita damaged its Lake Charles, La. campus, was originally slated to be a road contest for the Bobcats.
Jerelyn Lemmie paced Texas State (6-9 overall, 3-2 SLC), adding goals seven and eight on the season. The first, assisted by Amy Benton, came at the midpoint of the first half. Texas State took the 1-0 lead into the second half.
McNeese State's (3-7-1, 0-1-1 SLC) Cynthia Torres scored off a corner kick from Renee Landers 1:30 into the second half to tie the game at one. Taavia Whatley led all Cowgirls with four shots on the afternoon.
The Bobcats maintained offensive pressure throughout the game, outshooting the Cowgirls 26-10. Natalie Jackson made a game-high six shots in the win. Texas State also had an empty net opportunity in the first half, but a McNeese defender was able to block the Jackson shot on the goal line.
Jerelyn Lemmie scored her second of the afternoon, the game winner, from 30 yards out when Ross came out of the goal. Ross attempted to meet Lemmie before she could take a shot, but with help from Delayna Spivey, the sophomore put the ball in the net.
With the goals, Lemmie lead all Bobcats in scoring with 16 points. She also scored a goal in Friday's 4-2 loss at Northwestern State. Goalkeeper Paige Perriraz notched four saves.
The Bobcats have next weekend off before hosting two to close the season. Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State come to town on October 28 and 30, respectively. The Southland Conference Tournament is set for November 4-6 in Hammond, La.
