Volleyball Wins Four-Game Thriller Over Nicholls

Thibodaux, La. - Brittany Prewit knocked down 15 kills, and Amy Ramirez recorded 17 digs as the Bobcats knocked off Nicholls State 30-18, 28-30, 31-29, 31-29 at Thibodaux High School.

Texas State (10-8, 8-2 SLC) had to win a pair of 31-29 games, while Nicholls State (0-10, 0-8 SLC) got double-digit kills from four different players in their 10th-straight loss of the season.

Game one began with a Nicholls ace, and the Colonels did not trail until an attack error at 10-10 gave the `Cats an 11-10 lead. Texas State scored another pair of points to take a 13-10 lead, and after Nicholls cut the lead to 13-12, Texas State went on a 12-4 run that gave the `Cats a 25-16 lead in the game.

The `Cats closed the game on a 5-3 run for the 30-19 win that put Texas State up 1-0 in the match.

Nicholls State jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in game two, and the Colonels extended the lead to 13-7. Texas State got within four at the midway point, and with the score at 15-11, Texas State used a 9-5 run to get the score tied at 20-20.

The Bobcats took their first game two lead at 21-20, but after the `Cats extended the lead to 24-22, Nicholls State jumped on top with three in a row that made the score 25-24. Texas State would get within one two more times in game two, but Nicholls held strong and finished with a 30-28 win that tied the match at 1-1.

Texas State opened game three with three consecutive points, but Nicholls State fired back with four in a row that gave the Colonels a 4-3 lead. From that point, Nicholls outscored Texas State 11-4 to lead 15-7.

The Bobcats clawed back, cutting the lead to 15-9, and after the Colonels got a pair of points to lead 17-9, Texas State turned it on with an 11-4 run that cut the Colonel lead to 21-20. Texas State would tie the game at 23-23, and the Bobcats took the lead on a Nicholls attack error at 24-23.

Texas State finished the game with five kills, two by Prewit and Lawrencia Brown each. The Colonels made one last-ditch effort, getting within one at 30-29, Brown slammed a ball into the floor for the 31-29 win that put Texas State up 2-1 in the match.

Texas State won the match in a tight game three, a game in which the `Cats would again have to come from behind to win. The `Cats fell behind early, but with Nicholls State leading 10-5, Texas State went on a 5-1 run to get within one at 11-10.

The `Cats would eventually tie the game at 14-14, and with the score tied at 15-15, Ashley Stark gave the `Cats their first lead of the game with a kill to lead 16-15. The Colonels and Bobcats would play to three more ties, but Texas State got two in a row out of a 29-29 tie to win 31-29 in the game and 3-1 in the match.

Prewit's 15 kills were a team-high for Texas State, while Brown (13 kills) and Brandy St. Francis (10 kills) also found double digits in the kill column. Ramirez led the defense with 17 digs, and Erin Hickman (24 assists) split the setting duties with Christina Melvin (23 assists), as the two combined to assist on 47 of the team's 72 kills. Stark's three blocks led the team, and in all, the Bobcats stuffed 12 Colonel attacks on the afternoon.

Atina Porter led the Colonels with 14 kills, while Ashley Leonard recorded a team-best 22 digs for the Nicholls defense.

Texas State is back in action Saturday, when the Bobcats travel to Texas-Arlington for a 7 p.m. SLC match at Texas Hall.
