Texas State used an 11-2 run to open game one Friday night at Southeastern Louisiana and never looked back, beating the Lions 30-23, 30-19, 30-22 at Southeastern's University Center.
Texas State (9-8, 7-2 SLC) got nine kills and 11.5 points out of freshman outside hitter Lawrencia Brown in the win, while Southeastern Louisiana (6-11, 2-6 SLC) hit just .140 in the match.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game one and turned it into an 11-2 lead thanks in part to five Lion errors and a pair of kills by Brown. The Lions fought back after a time out, eventually cutting the Texas State lead to 17-15, but the `Cats used a 7-2 run to get the score to 24-17 and finished the Lions off with six more points to earn a 30-23 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Game two started with the Lions gaining first advantage, but down 2-0, Texas State scored three straight to gain a 3-2 lead and followed it with a 7-2 run that made the score 10-4.
Southeastern got back within six on three more occasions, but with the Bobcat lead at 18-12, Texas State went on an 9-3 run that made the score 27-15. The Bobcats would hang on for an 11-point, 30-19 win that put Texas State up 2-0 in the match.
Texas State came out firing in game three, and although Southeastern fought back intensely, the Bobcats never trailed in the decisive game. The game began with a 2-0 Bobcat lead, and though they were able to get up 14-10, the `Cats were unable to put the Lions away until an 8-2 run moved the score from 16-15 to 24-17 in favor of the Bobcats.
Texas State outscored Southeastern 6-5 to close the game with a 30-22 win, earning the Bobcats their fifth shut-out win of the season.
Brown's nine kills were a team-high for Texas State, and Ashley Stark chipped in seven in the win. Brown and Amy Ramirez shared the team digs lead with 12 each in the match, while Stark's three blocks led the Bobcats up front. Bobcat setter Erin Hickman assisted on 37 of the team's 48 kills on the night.
Southeastern's offense was paced by nine kills from LaToya Anthony and Kelsey Faulk, while Chelsie Cude assited on 21 of the Lions' 37 team kills. Megan Sutherland and Keri Hamblin led the defense with 15 digs each, while Anthony picked up three blocks in the loss.
The win keeps Texas State on pace with the SLC front-runners, as the `Cats entered the night tied for third in the standings with Texas-San Antonio. The Bobcats continue the road swing Saturday, when Texas State takes on Nicholls State at Thibodaux High School. First serve is scheduled for noon in Saturday's match.
