Texas-San Antonio used back-to-back two-point wins in games two and three to beat Texas State 30-19, 30-28, 32-30 Tuesday at the UTSA Convocation Center.
Texas State (8-8, 6-2 SLC) lost for the second time on the road in the Southland Conference, while Texas-San Antonio (9-7, 6-2 SLC) climbed into a second-place SLC tie with the win.
Lawrencia Brown opened the match with a kill from the left side of the floor for Texas State, and the `Cats moved the lead to 2-0 with a block at the net. Brown carded her second kill of the match on the next play to run the score to 3-0, but UTSA would get on the board with a kill that made the score 3-1.
A Bobcat reception error made the score 3-2, and the Roadrunners would tie the game at 3-3 on a Bobcat attacking error. Texas-San Antonio took its first lead at 4-3 by slipping a ball past the `Cat left side, but a Roadrunner error would again knot the score at 4-4.
UTSA regained the lead at 5-4 with a kill, and a block gave UTSA a 6-4 lead. The `Cats got back within one with an Elizabeth Nwoke kill at 6-5, and an Erin Hickman service ace tied the game at 6-6. The game would tie four more times, and with the score knotted at 10-10, the `Runners started a 3-0 run that made the score 13-10 and forced a Bobcat time out.
Texas State got within two points four more times, but with the score at 18-16 in favor of the Roadrunners, UTSA went on another 3-0 run to jump in front 21-16 and force another Bobcat time out.
A Roadrunner error out of the time out cut the lead to 21-17, but UTSA would get its five point lead back at 22-17 on a Texas State service error. The Roadrunners outscored the `Cats 8-2 from that point to win game one 30-19 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Game two began with a UTSA kill, and a Bobcat error would give UTSA a 2-0 lead. Texas State got the game's next four points to gain a 4-2 advantage, but the Roadrunners answered with consecutive points that tied the game at 4-4.
Texas State would again get consecutive points to take a 6-4 lead, and after a Bobcat attacking error cut the lead to 6-5, Texas State went on a 5-0 run that opened an 11-5 lead and forced a Roadrunner time out.
UTSA got the first point out of the time out to cut the lead to 11-6, and the Roadrunners would get two more to cut the lead to three at 11-8. After a Bobcat point made the score 12-8, the Roadrunners rallied for two more to cut the lead to 12-10.
A Roadrunner error pushed the Bobcat lead to 13-10, but the `Cats were unable to capitalize, carding a service error that got the Roadrunners back within two at 13-11. A UTSA kill cut the lead to 13-12, forcing a Texas State time out.
Texas State got the lead back to two at 14-12 following the break, and a St. Francis service ace made the lead to 15-12. UTSA got a point back with a kill at 15-13, and the `Runners scored the next two points on kills to tie the game at 15-15.
A Bobcat error broke the tie and gave UTSA its first lead of the game at 16-15, and after a second error gave UTSA a 17-15 lead, a Roadrunner service error gave the `Cats a point and cut the lead to 17-16.
A Texas State block tied the game at 17-17, but the Roadrunners answered with a 7-2 run that made the score 24-19. Four consecutive Bobcat points cut the lead to one at 24-23, and a Nwoke kill tied the game at 24-24. UTSA got back in front 26-24 with back-to-back Texas State errors, but the `Cats fired back with a Hickman kill that cut the lead to 26-25.
After a Roadrunner kill extended the lead to 27-25, the `Cats rattled off two in a row to tie the game at 27-27. UTSA gained game point with a kill and an ace at 29-27, and after a Bobcat point made the score 29-28, UTSA scored game point on a Texas State substitution red card to win 30-28 and go up 2-0 in the match.
Texas State opened game three with an Ashley Stark kill, but a Bobcat blocking error tied the score at 1-1. UTSA notched an ace that made the score 2-1, and consecutive kills opened the Roadrunner lead to 4-1.
The `Cats stopped the UTSA run with an Emily Jones kill, and a UTSA error cut the lead to one at 4-3. The `Cats tied the game at 4-4 with an ace and took the lead at 5-4 with a Roadrunner error.
A Bobcat kill pushed the lead to 6-4, and after a UTSA point cut the lead to 6-5, the `Runners tied the game with a kill at 6-6. A UTSA service error gave the `Cats a 7-6 lead, but the game would again tie at 7-7 on an errant Texas State serve.
UTSA regained the lead at 8-7 with a kill, but the `Cats would again answer with a kill to tie the game at 8-8. Texas-San Antonio again regained the lead at 9-8, and after another tie at 9-9, three consecutive UTSA errors gave the `Cats a 12-9 lead.
The Roadrunners got within two at 13-11, but consecutive Texas State points moved the lead to four at 15-11. Traded points made the score 16-12, but a 3-0 UTSA run shaved the Bobcat lead to 16-15 and prompted a Texas State time out.
A Roadrunner error out of the break made the Bobcat lead 17-15, but a Texas State error again slimmed the lead to 17-16. St. Francis carded a kill to make the score 18-16, and after a UTSA kill cut the lead to 18-17, the `Cats went back on top by two with a Roadrunner service error.
Texas-San Antonio nailed a point to again get within one at 19-18, and the `Runners would tie the game at 19-19 with a Texas State error. Back-to-back Bobcat blocks made the score 21-19, but the Roadrunners stayed within striking distance knocking down a kill to make the score 21-20.
An errant attack gave the `Cats a 22-20 lead and started a 3-1 run that put the `Cats on top 24-21. After a Roadrunner time out, an errant Roadrunner attack made the score 25-21, which was followed by a Roadrunner kill that cut the lead to 25-22.
UTSA went on a 4-2 run to get within one at 27-26, and after traded points made the score 28-27, Nwoke shot an attack past the Roadrunner defense to give the `Cats game point at 29-27.
A Texas State service error followed a UTSA time out and made the score 29-28, and the Roadrunners tied the game with a kill at 29-29. Texas State went up 30-29 on a kill by Stark, but the `Cats again let game point slip away when a UTSA attack hit the floor and tied the game at 30-30.
An errant Bobcat attack put the Roadrunners on top 31-30, and a Roadrunner attack from the middle of the floor secured the 32-30 game-three win as well as the 3-0 shut out.
Nwoke led the Bobcats with eight kills and ten digs, while St. Francis and Stark each tallied a team-high four blocks in the match. Hickman led the team in assists, aiding in 24 of the `Cats 29 team kills.
UTSA was paced by two players in double digits, led by Meagan Daniel's 18 kills. Victoria Prior followed with 11 kills, and Toni Rocheleau led the defense with 13 digs. DeeDee Strickland assisted on 39 of the Roadrunners' 54 team kills, and Connie Picard led UTSA with five blocks.
Texas State is back in action Friday, when the Bobcats travel to Hammond, La., for a 6 p.m. match with Southeastern Louisiana.
