Karry Griffin and Elizabeth Nwoke each recorded nine kills, as the `Cats darted past Nicholls State (0-6, 0-5 SLC) in a 30-22, 30-18, 30-26 shut-out win at Strahan Coliseum.
For Texas State (5-7, 4-1 SLC), the win marked the second-straight shut-out victory in conference play.
Game one began with Brittany Prewit carding a kill and an ace to give Texas State a 2-0 lead, and Nicholls countered with a point to make the score 2-1. Following the Colonel point, Texas State went on a 5-1 run that extended the lead to 7-2.
Nicholls fought back, cutting the lead to 10-9 and later 11-10, and after the Colonels again got within striking distance at 24-22, Texas State closed the game on a 6-0 run for a 30-22 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Texas State scored the first three points of game two, but Nicholls came storming back with three points of their own to tie the game at 3-3. Texas State broke the tie to lead 4-3 on a Colonel blocking error, and after a second tie at 4-4, Texas State went on an 8-1 run to take a 12-5 lead and force a Nicholls time out.
Nwoke scored the first point out of the time out for Texas State, and after a Bobcat error put the Colonels back on the board, Texas State scored back-to-back points to take a 15-6 lead at the game's midway point.
A 4-1 Nicholls run got the Colonels within six at 16-10, but the `Cats dominated the remainder of the game, outscoring Nicholls State 14-8 en route to the 30-18 game-two win that gave Texas State a 2-0 lead in the match.
Nicholls State opened game three with its first lead of the match, but the Bobcats answered with six straight to grab a 6-1 lead in game three's early going. Texas State was able to move the lead to 10-3, but Nicholls went on a 7-3 run that cut the Bobcat lead to 13-10. The Nicholls spurt brought on a mini-run of 3-1 for the Bobcats that made the score 16-11, prompting another Colonel time out.
Texas State led by as many as seven following the time out, and though the Colonels got back within three at 26-23, the Bobcats finished the game on a 4-3 run to grab a 30-26 win and their second shut-out of the weekend.
Griffin and Nwoke each had a match-high nine kills for the Bobcats, and Erin Hickman had her second-straight quality start, quarterbacking the `Cats with 40 saves in the match. Amy Ramirez led the Bobcat defense with seven kills, and in all, 12 of the 15 Bobcats that participated recorded at least one dig in the game. In addition to her performance on offense, Griffin led the `Cats with five blocks as well.
The win was Texas State's second-straight in the SLC. The `Cats will step outside of conference play on Tuesday, when they travel to Edinburg, Texas, for a 7 p.m. match with Texas-Pan American.
