Texas State Falls to Northwestern State 72-69

SAN MARCOS - Northwestern State's Jermaine Wallace scored 23 points and Byron Allen added a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Demons remained undefeated in Southland Conference play with a 72-69 win over Texas State Thursday.

With the win, Northwestern State improved to 11-8 and remained the only undefeated team in the SLC at 5-0. Texas State, 8-8 and 2-3, continues a home stand Saturday against Sam Houston State.

Texas State was held to just five rebounds in the second period as Northwestern State controlled the boards. The Demons outrebounded Texas State 48-18 and scored 28 second-chance points in the win. The Bobcats had just two offensive rebounds on the night.

Still, the `Cats mounted a last-minute comeback after Northwestern State's Byron Allen scored inside to give the Demons a 69-61 lead with 2:28 to play.

Josh Naylor drilled a three-pointer to cut the margin to 69-64 and after Tramaine Hancock missed a three at the other end, Anthony Dill's short jumper made the score 69-66 with 1:01 to play. Allen extended the Demons' lead to 71-66 with another inside bucket before Dill converted a three-point play to make the score 71-69 with 27 seconds to play.

The Bobcats were forced foul and Clifton Lee made the first of two free throws to stretch Northwestern State's lead to 72-69 with 15 seconds to play. Dill hauled in Lee's missed second attempt and made the outlet pass to Rory Green who worked the ball up court and got off a three-point attempt which missed.

Dill scored a career-high 26 points in the loss. Naylor added 12 points, going 4-for-9 from three-point range while Brad Brickens finished with 10 points.
