HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Bobcat soccer opened conference play Wednesday at Sam Houston State (1-7). Texas State won the match in regulation 4-3 over the Bearkats.
"It is a relief getting our first conference win under our belt, especially with this week being a three game week. We can use the momentum going into the weekend," said head coach Kat Conner.
Senior midfielder and captain, Kendra Comfort scored the first goal for the Bobcats with a long kick from 20 yards out, nine minutes into the first period.
The Bearkats scored a goal ten minutes later to tie the game 1-1.
Texas State answered with two goals before the period ended. The first goal was unassisted coming from freshman forward Jerelyn Lemmie at the 30:17 mark on the clock. Jerry dribbled past three Bearkat defenders and shot the ball right over the goalies shoulder for the goal. This was Jerry's first goal of the season.
The next Bobcat goal came two minutes later off a corner kick. Senior Jaynee Sherman took the pass from Comfort and made the score at the half 3-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
Sam Houston opened-up the second period with a goal, four minutes in from Kim Brown
Both teams fought hard battling back and forth for control of the ball. Texas State won the first battle with nine minutes left to play. Lemmie scored her second goal of the game and season with an assist from Sherman.
The Bearkats did get the final goal of the game at the 83:09 mark in the game. It was too late for Sam Houston to pull out the win.
Coach Conner said, "It was a good game at a tough field. Jerry did a wonderful job for us tonight, it was great to see her get in behind the other teams defense."
Texas State will face its second conference opponent, Northwestern State at 7 pm, Friday evening at Bobcat Soccer Complex. On Sunday at 1 pm, the Bobcats will play host to Louisiana-Monroe for their third conference match-up of the season.
