Texas State Soccer Opens Season With Two Road Wins

Final Stats

August 29, 2004 - EL PASO, Texas - Texas State started the 2004 soccer season at the Seventh Annual Miners Classic, which was hosted at UTEP. During the two day tournament Texas State faced and defeated UTEP in a double overtime match 3-2, and Texas Southern, 13-0.
In the match-up between the Miners and the 'Cats on Friday, both teams remained scoreless throughout the first half of play.
Head Coach Kat Conner said, "UTEP showed a lot of athleticism and speed, so we tried to slow them down in the second-half."
Five minutes into the second half, UTEP's Kaletia Roberts scored the first goal of the game. Fifteen minutes later Bobcat Danielle Holloway answered with two consecutive goals, one unassisted, to give Texas State a lead 2-1.
It looked as if the Bobcats had won the game in regulation but with five minutes left Kia Sams from UTEP assisted Jami Tullius to tie the score 2-2.
Neither team scored during the first over time, but at the 107:15 mark on the clock Angela Crissy scored the game winning goal unassisted.
"Crissy showed a lot of character especially for a freshman to see the goalie was out of position and went for it," said Conner.
"Our goal for Sunday was to work on our midfield defensive shape," said Conner, "and make our speed faster."
Sunday the 'Cats faced Texas Southern in the first game of the final day of the Miners Classic.
Texas State seniors Kendra Confort, Kendra Kade, and Jaynee Sherman scored the first three goals of the match during the first five minutes of play.
Holloway contributed the next two goals at 8:15 and 10:09 to bring her goals for the season to four.
With the score 5-0, sophomore First-Team Preseason All-Conference player Natalie Holder added three goals to give the 'Cats a 8-0 lead going into the second half.
Less than one-minute into the second half of play Crissy scored Texas State's ninth goal of the game unassisted. Crissy scored again unassisted with 47:35 on the clock.
Holder scored the Bobcats' 11th goal with an assist from transfer senior Audrey VanDeWalle.
Goals 12 and 13 came from freshmen Kayla Thornton and Amanda Machado, respectively.
"I am most proud of the shutout," Conner said. "We want the team to respect their competition as well as each other by bringing their `A' game, and that is what they did today."
The Bobcats will be playing their first home game of the season this Friday at 7 p.m. against Loyola. The 'Cats will then play host to Florida International at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
