SAN MARCOS -
Texas State opened the 2003 NCAA fall National Letter of Intent period with a pair of signings, head coach Dennis Nutt announced. High school seniors Roderick Adams and Matt Canady have signed on to join the Bobcat program next fall.
Adams is a guard (6-1, 185) from Cedar Hill (Texas) High where he has been a two-year starter for Coach David Milson. He averaged 10.4 points and 3.4 assists as a junior at Cedar Hill, helping the team to the Class-5A region I championship game. They lost to the eventual state champion, DeSoto, and finished the season with a 31-3 record. Cedar Hill is currently ranked No. 3 in the pre-season Class-5A State poll.
"Roderick is one of the most athletic guards to come out of Cedar Hill in a long time," Coach Milson said. "His toughness and unselfishness make him a natural team leader."
Adams was named First-Team All-District as a junior. He teamed with Jason Horton, who signed with the University of Missouri today, to form what Texas Roundball magazine called "the best backcourt tandem in the state." Adams is ranked as a Top 50 senior in the state by Texas Hoops. Adams was also recruited by Air Force, Army and SFA.
"We are extremely excited about having Roderick Adams join the Bobcat program," Nutt said. "He is a fine young man from a great family. He is an outstanding athlete that can play both the point and off guard positions. Anytime you get a player from Cedar Hill and Coach David Milson, you are getting a quality young man who will be well prepared for college."
Canady is a post (6-8, 230) player from Tulsa (Okla.) Metro Christian Academy where he lettered in each of the past three seasons. He averaged 20.1 points and 12 rebounds a game last season for Coach Will Reece and averaged 16 and 10 as a sophomore. Canady has helped Metro Christian to a 53-4 record over the past two seasons.
"Matt has meant a tremendous deal to our program over the last three years," Coach Reece said. "He is a better person that he is a player. Matt has tremendous character and it shine in the way he carries himself on and off the court. He is an effective scorer in the low post and can also step out and shoot with range. He is unselfish and passes the ball well, also."
Canady was the Star Conference Player of the Year as a junior and has been selected to the Oklahoma Tip-Off magazine "Super Five", representing the top five players in the state. He is also tabbed as the Class-3A pre-season Player of the Year by the publication. Canady has scored 1,087 career points and needs just 120 this season to become the all-time leading scorer in school history. Canady was also recruited by Tulsa, Southwest Missouri, Louisiana-Lafayette, Wisconsin-Green Bay, UTSA and SFA.
"We are pleased to have Matt Canady in the Bobcat family," Nutt said. "We feel fortunate to get a player of his caliber. Matt is a versatile big man who can score inside and out, and he is a proven winner from a winning program. Matt certainly has benefited from playing under Coach Reece and will be able to step in immediately as a freshman.
