SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State volleyball team (5-3, 0-1) fell in its Southland Conference opener to Texas-Arlington (9-1, 1-0), by a score of 3-0 (25-30, 27-30, 26-30) on Tuesday night. The loss marks the first for the Bobcats at home where they are now 3-1 overall.
It was a frustrating match for the Bobcats, as the team committed 24 attacking errors and eight service errors on the night. Meanwhile, the Mavericks controlled the frontline, using their size advantage to block 12 attacks, and converted 52 kills for an attack percentage of .347.
"We knew going in that this was going to be a close match and that it would come down to who committed the fewest errors," Head Coach Karen Chisum said. "Unfortunately we didn't pass well and that leads to errors, but you have to give credit to Coach Seymour and UTA because they played a great match."
Despite the loss the `Cats did have strong performances from senior outside hitter Stephanie Torregrosa and senior middle blocker Kacee Rogers. Torregrosa collected her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and a team-high 14 digs, while Rogers totaled 16 kills and two service aces. Senior setter Krystal Kolkhorst picked up her second double-double of the season with 52 set assists and 10 defensive digs, while junior outside hitter Lizzy Nwoke led the team with 17 kills.
Two players had double-doubles for the Mavs, as freshman Morgan Rogers had 12 kills and 14 digs, while junior Ashley Van Antwerp tallied a team-best 17 kills and 14 digs.
The Bobcats will play their next four matches on the road beginning with McNeese State on Sep. 17 at 7 p.m. The `Cats will return to Strahan Coliseum to face Nicholls State on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
