WACO - Texas State erased a 21-3 halftime deficit only to see its upset bid against a Division I-A school fall short as Baylor held on for a 24-17 win over the Bobcats Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Texas State started red-shirt freshman Chase Wasson at quarterback after a game-time decision sidelined junior Barrick Nealy who continues to nurse an injury to his ribs. Wasson completed 12-of-27 passes for 164 yards and engineered two, third-quarter touchdown drives to pull the `Cats to within four points of the Bears heading into the fourth quarter.

On Texas State's first drive of the second half, Wasson tossed a 73-yard touchdown pass to K.R. Carpenter to cut Baylor's lead to 21-10 with 9:11 to play in the third. The passing play was the longest of either player's career. Carpenter had a 70-yard touchdown reception last year against Southeastern Louisiana to equal a season-long for a passing play in 2003.

Baylor's next offensive series went in reverse fast starting with holding call which gave the Bears a first-and-20 from its own 21. The Bears were called for a false start on their next play then Texas State's Dan Dolce sacked Dane King for a 10-yard loss back to the six. Bobcat defensive lineman Travis Upshaw tackled Baylor running back Jonathan Golden on consecutive short gains to force onto the field the Bear punt team.

After a 60-yard punt by Baylor's Dani Sepulveda gave the Bobcats possession at their own 26, Texas State went to its running game with junior tailback Douglas Sherman doing most of the damage. Sherman carried the ball seven times for 40 yards including a 7-yard touchdown run. Steven Dietz's point-after cut the Baylor lead to 21-17 with nine seconds to play in the third quarter.

Baylor would add a 38-yard field goal by Kenny Webb with 5:10 to play to give the Bears a 24-17 lead.

On Texas State's next drive, Wasson completed a 10-yard pass to Devin Freeman on a third-and-five play and Sherman would convert a third-and-one situation. Wasson would pick up five yards to the Baylor 49 and the Bobcats called timeout with 1:47 to play. On second-and-four, Wasson's pass to John Tyson fell incomplete. Wasson would be pressured by linebacker Justin Crooks who sacked the Bobcat signal caller, and in the process, forced a fumble which was recovered by the Bears' Maurice Linquist.

Baylor would run out the clock to end the game.

Texas State fell behind early.

On the Bobcats' second series of the game, Wasson tossed an errant pitch which was picked up by Crooks and returned nine yards for Baylor's first touchdown.

Wasson would come back on the Bobcats' next series to engineer a 59-yard scoring drive, culminating in a 38-yard Dietz field goal with 8:31 to play in the first quarter.

Wasson completed a 17-yard pass to Tyrone Scott as well as a 23-yarder to Ike Chekwa on the scoring drive. Terrell Harris would also roll off a 13-yard run with the Bobcats facing a third-and-1 from their own 47.

Baylor would extend its lead to 14-3 on a two-yard touchdown pass from Dane King to Mike Miller with 1:22 to play in the first quarter. The Bears also put together a late, first-half scoring drive with King completing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Webb with 10 seconds to play in the half that made the score 21-3 at the break.
