Josh Naylor came off the bench to score 17 second-half points while Anthony Dill added 16 as Texas State defeated St. Gregory's 59-48 Saturday afternoon in Strahan Coliseum.
Naylor drilled a pair of three-pointers and scored eight straight points during a 13-2 Bobcat run as Texas State went from trailing by five to leading 48-40 with 4:54 to play. Naylor's three with 9:54 to play tied the game at 40-40. Out of a timeout on the Bobcats' next possession, Naylor got around a screen set by Zach Allison and scored another three-pointer from the wing to put the Bobcats up 43-40. Texas State would go on to stretch the lead to 48-40.
Dill, who had six rebounds in addition to his 16 points, knocked down six straight free throws in the final minute to help ice the victory.
With the win, Texas State improved to 4-2 and will play host to Rochester College Wednesday to close out a three-game home stand. St. Gregory's fell to 3-7.
The Cavalivers led by as many as 10 points in the first half, 20-10 with 9:12 to play in the period, before Brad Brickens hit a trio of three-pointers to cut the lead to 28-27 at the break.
Brickens' third three-pointer gave Texas State a 23-22 lead but after the teams traded baskets, St. Gregory's Tarin Baker scored on back-to-back jumpers to give the Cavaliers the lead at the break.
Baker had 12 first-half points but was held to no points on 0-for-3 shooting in the second period. He also had three, second-half turnovers.
St. Gregory's freshman Patrick Jones scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers.
