HAMMOND, Louisiana - Texas State soccer played against Northwestern State Friday in the semi-final match of the Southland Conference Tournament. Senior Jaynee Sherman scored the game winning goal for the `Cats, with less than one minute left to play. Giving Texas State the 3-2 win over Northwestern and allowing the 'Cats to advance to the championship game.
Neither Texas State nor Northwestern State was able to find the net to score in the first half of play. "It was a tough game, but the team did a really good job of executing the game plan," said head coach for the Bobcats Kat Conner.
However, a little over one minute into the second period Julie Zavala from Northwestern State scored unassisted for the Demons to give them the 1-0 lead.
Texas State's leading scorer and Southland Conference Freshman and Player of the Year, Danielle Holloway answered the Demon goal less than one minute later off an assist from mid-fielder Delayna Spivey. Holloway's goal tied the game 1-1 early in the second half.
The game remained tied until Northwestern's Zavala scored her second, 66:38 minutes into the game, and the Demons went up 2-1.
With less than ten minutes left in the game freshman Angela Crissy evened the score again getting the 'Cats back into the game. Coach Conner said, "We did a great job of battling back, after getting down by a point."
Freshman midfielder Kayla Thornton passed the ball to Sherman with 50 seconds left on the clock, who found the back of the net to give Texas State the 3-2 win. "Our three seniors Jaynee Sherman, Kendra Kade, and Kendra Comfort showed great leadership today," Coach Conner recalled. "They went out in the second half and made it possible for us to win."
The Bobcats out shot the Demons 12 shots on goal to nine. Texas State's goalie Brittany Beltramini notched seven saves for the game. "Amy Benton was instrumental in our win, she really stepped-up and played great offense and defense."
Texas State will be playing in the Championship game of the Southland Conference tournament against Louisiana-Monroe who defeated the regular season champions Stephen F. Austin in their semi-final game. The game is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hammond, Louisiana. The winner of the Southland Conference Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
