Texas State Wins Five-Game Battle At TAMU-CC

The Texas State volleyball team prevailed in a tough non-conference match over the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, winning in five-games (30-27, 28-30, 26-30, 30-25, 15-12) at the Moody Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

With the win the Bobcats improve to 20-5 overall while they remain in a tie with UT-Arlington for first place in the Southland Conference with a 12-3 league record.

The Islanders drop to 15-12 on the season and suffer their fourth straight loss to the Bobcats.

Texas State struggled on offense for most of the night with 76 kills on .187 hitting while the Islanders finished with 69 kills with a slightly higher hitting percentage at .206.

The match was highlighted by senior Krystal Kolkhorst who's 43 assists on the night made her the fourth Bobcat in school history to record 4,000 career assists.  Kolkhorst joins Natalie Spann (4,283), Nicky Rose (5,010), and Kristy Braun (5,517) as the Bobcats' all-time leaders in assists. 

The 'Cats had a strong performance from sophomore Karry Griffin who had a season-best 21 kills and seven defensive digs on .341 hitting.

Senior Stephanie Torregrosa recorded 11 kills on a team-high .350 hitting while senior Kacee Rogers finished with 13 kills and seven blocks.

On defense senior libero Kristy Jones led the team in digs with 23 and junior Amy Ramirez added 16 as the Bobcats out-dug the Islanders by four in the match (80-to-76).

The Islanders had three players reach double figures in kills led by Anna Machado with 18.  Lauren Smith finished with 14 kills and Ashley McDonald had 11 kills.

Texas State will return to league play on Friday as the team hit the road to face Nicholls State (7p.m.) followed by a showdown at Southeastern Louisiana (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
