Texas sophomore forward P.J. Tucker scored 18 points and had four steals as the Longhorns defeated Texas State 95-63 in both teams' season opener Friday in the Frank Erwin Center.
Texas shot 57 percent from the field and made 13-of-22 three-pointers (59 percent) en route to the victory.
Texas State senior forward Anthony Dill scored a career-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead the Bobcats. He was 6-for-9 from the field in the second half and also had a team-high eight rebounds for the game.
The `Cats stayed in the game early and enjoyed its last lead at the 12:07 mark on a jumper by Josh Naylor to put Texas State in front, 19-18.
Naylor, who had 11 first-half points, was 3-for-4 from three-point range in the period. He also had a team-high four assists.
As a team, Texas State was 8-of-19 from three-point range. The Bobcats led the Southland Conference last year, averaging 7.5 treys per game.
But after Naylor's bucket gave the `Cats a one-point advantage, Texas went on a 14-4 run that included three-pointers by Kenton Paulino and Kenny Taylor.
The Longhorns had six players score in double figures including Paulino who came off the bench to score 13, knocking down a trio of three-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the line. He also was the `Horns co-leader in assists with five.
Texas made six three-pointers in the first half to build a 50-35 lead at the break and finished with 13 treys.
Texas State opens at home Tuesday when it plays host to St. Edward's. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. Texas travels to Hawaii to begin play in the Maui Invitational against Chaminade Monday.
