SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State (8-6-0) soccer won its fifth conference game of the season Friday against McNeese State (2-10-0). This places the Bobcats in second place behind Stephen F. Austin, who the 'Cats will face on Sunday.
"The freshmen and sophomores really got an opportunity to play tonight and learn," said head coach Kat Conner. "In the first period they did a good job of stale mating us, but in the second period we came out and were able to create much better movement."
Texas State's top scorer, Danielle Holloway got the goals started in the second period six minutes in. Dani scored her eleventh goal of the season unassisted to put the 'Cats up 1-0. Holloway has been named offensive player of the week for the Southland Conference for her outstanding ability to put the ball in the net.
Senior forward Jaynee Sherman scored the second goal of the game off a header from fellow senior Kendra Kade. Jaynee is the Bobcat's second leading scorer and leader in number of assist. Sherman's goal gave the 'Cats a 2-0 lead over the Cowgirls.
McNeese's leading scorer Ashley Viscariello came back and scored the first Cowgirl goal of the game unassisted. She later served an assist to teammate Audrey Smith for a second Cowgirl goal, balancing the score 2-2 at the end of regulation.
The Bobcats headed into over time for the second time this season. With a little over, two minutes left to play in the overtime Kade scored the game winning goal. She headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick from fellow senior Kendra Comfort. Coach Conner said of Kade's performance, "Kenny Kade really came alive tonight."
