SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State (11-9-0, 8-4-0 SLC) soccer team won its final game of the season 2-1 in double over-time against Sam Houston State University (2-17-1, 1-10-1 SLC). With the 'Cats win and Louisiana-Monroe's (12-5-2, 7-4-1 SLC) double overtime loss to Northwestern (10-10-0, 8-4-0), the Bobcats finish the season ranked second in the conference behind Stephen F. Austin (11-4-3, 9-1-2 SLC).
Danielle Holloway scored her 15 goal of the season against Sam Houston four minutes into the game. Holloway gave the 'Cats the early 1-0 lead with an assist from forward Jaynee Sherman.
The score remained 1-0 until the second half, when Mary McGregor from Sam Houston State scored an unassisted goal to tie the game 1-1.
At the end of regulation, the score remained 1-1. The Bobcats headed into overtime for the fourth time this season, never having lost a game they have played into extra minutes.
After the first overtime period the score remained tied 1-1. Freshman forward Angela Crissy finally broke the tie seven minutes into the second overtime period. Crissy's goal was a slide kick off a pass from fellow freshman forward Jerelyn Lemmie.
When asked about the game head coach for the Bobcats Kat Conner said, "The mobility of our forwards tonight was great. The defense, especially our goalkeeper Brittany Beltramini did an excellent job as well. When Brittany is in rare form, it gives the rest of the team confidence."
Beltramini recorded six saves for the night and played the entire 106 minutes 51 seconds. The 'Cats had 27 shots in the game 19 of those shots where on goal.
Next, the Bobcats will be heading to the Conference tournament in Hammond Louisiana. Since the number one and number two ranked teams in the conference get byes, the 'Cats will not play until Friday, November 5. "This is huge for us it will put us on a very similar schedule to what we have been playing all season. It will help us to focus mentally and physically," said Coach Conner. Texas State will have to wait to find out whom they play from the first round of the single elimination tournament.
