San Marcos, Texas - The Texas State volleyball team took sole possession of first place on Friday night with a record-breaking five-game (30-25, 35-33, 24-30, 28-30, 15-10) victory over the Mavericks of Texas-Arlington.
With the win the Bobcats increase its winning-streak to nine straight matches and improve to 14-4 and 8-2 in the Southland Conference.
UTA falls to 15-4 overall and 7-3 in Southland action.
"This is a big win for us," said Head Coach Karen Chisum. "Both teams played an incredible match and we are happy to come out of here with the win."
It was a historic night for Texas State as three Bobcats set new career highs, while two long-standing Bobcat records were smashed.
Senior setter Krystal Kolkhorst collected 84 total set assists in five games to break Kristy Braun's old team record of 80 set during the 1992 season.
The team's 91 total assists also set a new club record breaking the pervious mark of 90 also set in 1992.
Junior outside hitter Lizzy Nwoke established a new career-high with 31 kills on the night breaking her pervious personal best of 23 set earlier this season. Nwoke was also an efficient hitter in the match with a hitting percentage of .343.
Senior middle blocker Kacee Rogers also set a career-high with 27 kills on an impressive .500 hitting. Her 27 kills marks the second match this season in which Rogers has recorded 20 or more kills in a match.
For the second time this season, senior libero Kristy Jones reached the 30-dig plateau with 31 total to lead all players in the match.
Senior outside hitter Stephanie Torregrosa recorded yet another double-double with 16 kills and 22 digs.
UTA had a big night from two of its star players as Ashley Van Antwerp and Caley Smith combined for 44 kills and 41 digs.
As a team the Bobcats recorded 96 kills, just five short of the team record, on .274 hitting, while the Mavs posted 83 kills on .280 hitting.
The `Cats defense was solid as the team out-dug its opponent by 19 (104-to-85), which allowed for 19 more attacks by the Bobcats.
Texas State will look to protect its position as the top team in the Southland Conference tomorrow when they face Sam Houston State (12-6, 6-3 SLC) in Huntsville, Texas.
The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
