Bobcat Soccer Moves to #1 in Conference After OT Win Over SFA

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State's Delayna Spivey scored 35 seconds into overtime as the Bobcats defeated Stephen F. Austin 4-3 in overtime and gained a share of the Southland Conference lead.

Texas State scored the game-winning goal after tying the score late in regulation. Senior Kendra Kade collected a pass from Danielle Holloway and found the back of the net for the goal.

The Bobcats won in overtime for the second time in as many matches. It was the 'Cats third overtime victory of the year.

"Delayna played both ends of the field very well today," coach Kat Conner said of Spivey. "She was there on offense to score and she did a great job of getting in and helping the defense."

With the win, Texas State improved to 9-6 and with its 6-1 league record pulled into a tie with SFA.

"Today I feel great, but I know tomorrow we have to go out and fight to stay where we are," Conner said.

Texas State was able to strike first against the Ladyjacks as sophomore Natalie Holder scored the Bobcats' first goal off a deflection from an SFA defender at the 8:40 mark.

The Bobcats went up 2-0 when Spivey scored off a corner kick from Kendra Comfort at the 12:40 mark and would take the lead into halftime.

Stephen F. Austin, which had shutout its last four opponents, came out after the break and scored three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead.

Christie Mestayer scored SFA's first goal 8:31 into the second half, taking a 20-yard shot which sailed into the net. Less than three minutes later, Shahin Pabani scored another long goal for the Ladyjacks to tie the score at 2-2. SFA went up 3-2 at the 60:39 mark when Kim Gray scored on a corner kick.

Texas State will be at home again Friday playing Southeastern Louisiana in a 7 p.m. match. The Bobcats will also play host to Nicholls State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
