SAN MARCOS, Texas – Three home runs were hit by Texas State (28-21) in its 9-6 win over Baylor (25-23) Tuesday night in the final home midweek game at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark this season. The victory was also the 200th of head coach
Steven Trout's career.
Getting the win was
Titan Targac (2-4) after the freshman threw two scoreless innings and struck out four. Cade Hansen (0-4) allowed three runs on three hits in the first 2.2 innings to take the loss.
Seven other Bobcat hurlers threw an inning out of the bullpen. Striking out two batters apiece were
Kyle Froehlich and
Alizaeh Gutierrez. Tossing a scoreless frame was Shance Connell,
Colby Diaz,
Dylan Kerbow,
Cameron O'Banan and Froehlich.
Four players recorded two base hits on the night led by
Rashawn Galloway finishing with a double, home run and three RBI.
Bennett Fryman drove in two runs, scored twice and hit a homer.
Chase Mora recorded two doubles that plated a run each time and
Justin Vossos finished 2-for-2 with two runs.
Also hitting a long ball on the night was
Jaquae Stewart while
Tanner Carson and
Clayton Namken each had a base knock and came around to score once.
A run of scoring in six straight innings began in the second for Texas State. Namken led off the frame with a single and would score three pitches later when Fryman blasted a 1-1 offering over the right field wall.
Galloway would hit his 10th home run of the season with one gone in the third. He became the fifth Bobcat to reach double-digit round trippers to tie the program record set in 2023.
In the fourth, back-to-back singles by Vossos and Carson with two outs brought up Mora. The senior would send a 1-2 offering down the left field line for an RBI double to increase the lead to four runs.
After the Bears got on the scoreboard with a solo homer from Travis Sanders in the top of the fifth, Stewart answered back in the bottom of the frame. The junior blasted a 0-1 offering off the batter's eye for his team leading 14th long ball.
The top of the sixth saw Baylor respond with two runs to make it a two-run contest.
Both Carson and Vossos were hit by a pitch to start off the next half innings. After Mora was walked on four pitches to load the bases, a wild pitch allowed Vossos to score. A 1-2 pitch was sent to right centerfield off the bat of Galloway for a two-run double to increase the advantage to 8-3.
The final run of the game for TXST came in the seventh when Mora laced the first pitch he saw down the third baseline. The ball hit off the bag that resulted in another RBI double for the senior.
Baylor's first five batters reached to start the top of the ninth, which resulted in three runs. With the bases loaded and one gone, Froehlich struck out the next two batters to end the contest and snap Texas State's four-game losing streak.
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to the Natural State to take on Arkansas State for a three-game series that begins on Friday at 6 p.m.
