DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Texas State's
Tristan Stivors as the 2022 Stopper of the Year on Friday. He is the first player since the award's inception in 2005 to win the honor from the Sun Belt Conference.
Â
Stivors put together the best season ever by a Bobcat closer with a program record and nation-leading 18 saves. He also sported a 7-1 record and 2.21 ERA that saw him surrender just 18 runs, 15 of them earned, and allow multiple runs in just four of his 32 appearances.
Â
The senior right-hander finished the season with 86 strikeouts. In 23 contests, he struck out multiple batters while also holding opponents to a .210 batting average.
Â
At the Stanford Regional, Stivors appeared in two games to help guide TXST to the regional final for the first time in program history. The Castroville, Texas native threw two scoreless innings and struck out five to close out the Bobcats' first meeting with the Cardinal. He followed up with a career-high nine strikeouts over seven innings in the winner-take-all regional final contest.
Â
Stivors has twice been named to an All-America First Team this year (Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA) and is an All-Sun Belt First Team honoree.
Â
He joins a standout list of previous NCBWA Stoppers of the Year and is the fifth from a Lone Star State program.
