SAN MARCOS -
A hard fought battle that played down to wire gave the Texas State Bobcats its second Southland Conference victory when Erica Michaud scored the game-winning goal for a 1-0 shutout over the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions Friday night at Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The `Cats are 6-3-3 on the season and 2-0-1 in league action. The tally surpasses last season's win total and puts the team just two wins away from tying its 2007 conference mark. Southeastern falls to 6-4-1 overall and
"Tonight was like any rival game," said head coach Kat Conner. "Possession flew back and forth the entire game and both teams were fighting hard for respect. The tough thing is that someone has to be on the losing end and tonight we came out on top. We fought very hard for the goal and walked away with the win."
The back and forth action was so prevalent it seemed as if the Bobcats were headed for its sixth overtime game of the season. The first half had passed and eight shots came off the `Cats foot, with one falling on goal. SLU goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus turned the shot away to hold off any scoring. The Lady Lions posed a similar threat, attacking quickly in the sixth minutes, but Mandi Mawyer caught her first save when she stopped Dana Mayer's attempt.
As the second half of regulation came to play, both team's offense grew aggressive. Neither team played for the tie, each attempting seven shots. At 80:35, Texas State was granted a corner kick and Andrea Grifo placed the shot in place for the score. A header from Kendall Webber looked to be the first goal of the game, but it edged high of the net and hit the crossbar.
Less than a minute later, Britney Curry caught an open look from the left side and dribbled within 18 yards to bring out Bockhaus. With the Lady Lions in pocket, Curry dished off to Michaud who scored her fourth goal of the season to seal the victory.
Michaud attempted a game-high five shots in tonight's win and SLU's Kristen McDonald led her squad with three shots.
Mawyer wrapped up the game with three saves and earned her fourth shutout of the season. The Bobcats have seven shutouts this season.
"Tonight was an emotional game," added Conner. "We will definitely cherish the win, but we still have Sunday. We need to rest and be ready to come back for another victory."
Texas State will host Nicholls State (2-9-0) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"Cindy (Piper) will bring her team ready to fight and we need to come ready to play," said Conner.
