Ronnie earned a basketball scholarship to Southwest Texas State where he made the All-Conference team in two final seasons. Upon graduating, immediately got into coaching and, after serving for several years as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State, was named the head coach at San Jacinto Junior College in 1977. While at San Jacinto, he won 10 Texas Junior College Athletic Conference titles and 3 National Junior College championships.

Was named Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions as well as national Coach-of-the-Year in 1983 and 1986. Also, was hired as head basketball coach for the University of South Alabama in 1987. Won two Sun Belt Conference titles and, made it into the 1989 NCAA tournament, where his team was defeated by in-state rival, Alabama, in dramatic fashion before losing to the eventual national champion, Michigan. His 1989 team was ranked in the top 25.

In 1998 Ronnie was chosen to start the basketball program at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and stayed there for ten seasons before returning to South Alabama. Retired from coaching at the college level in 2012 and began teaching basketball fundamentals in youth basketball programs.

“Although I have been blessed to have coached some incredibly talented players at the collegiate level, several who have gone on to play in the NBA, I get more of a thrill from watching a young player work hard to develop his or her skills. If you know someone who loves the game of basketball and is willing to work hard to become the best that they can be, give me a call and let's get them in the classroom. After all, great players are made, not born.”
