Leo Chafin was a member of the Texas State Football team from 1950-1952. After transferring from Southwestern University, Chafin made an immediate impact on the Bobcats. As a half back, Chafin was the team’s leading scorer and rusher during his two years with the Bobcats. Know as an ironman, he played every offensive down during his time as a Bobcat. In 1952 he broke the school record for yards rushed in a single game with 181 yards against Texas A&I. He held this record for 15 years. He also compiled over 1,400 career rushing yards. Chaffin played for legendary Bobcat coach Milton Jowers, who described Chafin as the “toughest football player he ever had”.
In 1955, Chafin signed an agreement with the NFL and the Cleveland Browns becoming the first member of the Texas State football team to sign a professional football contract.
Chafin was president of the “T” Association for two years and a founding member of the Bobcat Club. He also served as president of the Bobcat Club during the first and third year of its existence.
