Ken Coffey was a standout defensive back for the Texas State football team from 1980-1981.  Coffey was an instrumental part of some of the best teams in the history of Bobcat Athletics, helping the Bobcats secure back-to-back Lone Star Conference titles in both 1980 and 1981, and helping the Bobcats win their first NCAA Division II National Championship in 1981.

In 1981, he was the team leader in interceptions with 7 and was named the team’s defensive player of the year. In 1981 he was named Lone Star first team All-Conference and was named first team All-American.

After graduation, Coffey went on to become the 12th Bobcat to sign a professional football contract after being selected in the 1982 NFL draft. Coffey played in 41 games and recorded 7 interceptions during his NFL career from 1983-86.  A starting safety for the Washington Football Team, Coffey helped lead Washington to Super Bowl XVIII.
